Parent Instructors

Who can teach the driving portion

Texas has strict rules about who can supervise a teen’s behind-the-wheel training. Here’s who qualifies.

Your instructor can be

  • A parent, step-parent, or foster parent
  • A grandparent or step-grandparent
  • A court-appointed legal guardian (not a power of attorney)
  • Another adult they designate who is 25+, has driven 7+ years, and has held a valid license for 3+ years

An instructor cannot have

  • A conviction for criminally negligent homicide
  • A DWI conviction in the last 7 years
  • A license suspended or revoked for traffic violations in the past 3 years
  • Six or more points on their driver license

The 30 hours of practice must be supervised from the front passenger seat by a licensed adult 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience.

Good to Know

Teen drivers ed questions, answered

How old do I have to be?

You can start the course at 14. The youngest you can apply for a learner license is 15, and anyone under 18 must complete driver education. You must hold your permit for 6 months before the skills test (unless you turn 18 first).

How long does the course take?

The 24-hour course takes a minimum of 16 days — that’s a state rule for every Texas school. It’s self-paced, so you can log in and out as often as you like, but some sections can only be completed one day at a time.

Can I take it on my phone?

Yes. The classroom hours are 100% online and the course was built to work on any internet-connected phone, tablet, or computer.

What’s the ITTD requirement?

Before your skills test you complete the 2-hour Impact Texas Teen Driver (ITTD) video and print the certificate. It’s valid for 90 days and required to take the road test.

What is a hardship (MRDL) license?

A Minor’s Restricted Driver License may be issued to applicants at least 15 who have a proven necessity to drive. You complete all normal requirements except the 6-month permit-holding period. It expires on your next birthday.

Does school enrollment matter?

Yes. Anyone under 18 must be enrolled and attending school (public, private, or homeschool) — or hold a diploma/GED — to be licensed. You’ll show a Verification of Enrollment (VOE); homeschoolers use the homeschool VOE form.

I lost my completion certificate.

Just log back into your course and re-download your DE-964 (or DE-964E) certificate anytime — there’s no expiration date on it, though written test scores are valid for two years.

What if I fail the final?

Take it again — you get unlimited attempts to pass the final without repeating the classroom portion.

I started elsewhere and can’t get driving time.

Request a Transfer Certificate from your original school, register for our parent-taught program, purchase the TDLR guide, and log your 30 practice hours. We issue a PTDE-964 so you can proceed to your skills test.

Can I change my parent instructor?

Yes, without repurchasing the teaching guide. Submit the TDLR change form (or email TDLR your receipt number, student name/DOB, and the new instructor’s name).
